Why build instead of buying a boxed set?

Boxed sets count lids as pieces and often include small pans most people rarely use. Building from the pans you need gets you better cookware for the money. Read the full stainless cookware set buying guide.

How the Set Builder works

Choose how many people you cook for (1 to 6+), your cooking style and an All-Clad line. The tool starts from a core of a large fry pan, a saucepan and a stock pot sized to your household, then adds pieces your style calls for: a sauté pan for braises, a second fry pan for families or searing-heavy cooks, a small saucepan for sauce makers or a larger saucepan for batch cooks.

Methodology

Sizes follow the guidance in our fry pan, saucepan and stock pot guides, which are based on capacity, standard servings and leaving room to avoid crowding or boil-overs. Line descriptions come from Capital Cookware's listings.

Frequently asked questions

What pieces should a cookware set include?+

At minimum a 12" fry pan, a 2–3 qt saucepan and an 8-qt stock pot; add a sauté pan for braises.

Is a custom set better than a boxed set?+

It avoids paying for pieces you won't use. Boxed sets can be cheaper per piece.

Can I mix All-Clad lines?+

Yes. For example, D5 fry pans with a D3 stock pot.

How many pans do I need for a family of four?+

Typically 6: two fry pans, two saucepans, a sauté pan and a stock pot.

Does the Set Builder save my data?+

No. It runs in your browser.

Where do the size recommendations come from?+

From our sizing guides, based on capacity and typical servings.
