How the Pan Finder works

The Pan Finder asks four questions: what you cook most, how you feel about technique and care, your burner type and how you like to invest. Each answer moves the recommendation toward the construction that suits that cooking style. It's a rules-based recommendation built on how cookware materials behave, not a popularity ranking or a paid placement.

What drives each recommendation
If you choose…You'll be steered towardWhy
Eggs, fish, pancakes + effortless careClad nonstick or hard anodized nonstickEasy release at moderate heat
Soups, pasta, big batchesA heavy stock pot + a saucepanVolume matters more than responsiveness
Pan sauces + maximum control or "the very best"Copper Core 5-plyFastest response to heat changes
Electric burners or "buy once, buy right"D5 5-plySteadier, more forgiving heat
Everything else, especially valueD3 tri-plyFast, light and the best value per pan

The methodology

The logic is grounded in two kinds of facts. First, material physics: copper conducts heat best, then aluminum, and stainless steel is a poor conductor on its own, which is why clad construction matters. Second, product specs stated on Capital Cookware's listings, such as induction compatibility and oven-safe temperatures. We don't use invented scores or reviews.

After you get a result

  • Read the linked guide. Each result points to the guide that explains the reasoning in depth.
  • Use the Set Builder to turn the recommendation into a sized list of pans.
  • Compare materials in the Material Lab or watch heat spread in the Heat Lab.
  • Browse every guide by topic on the guides hub.

Frequently asked questions

What cookware should I buy first?+

For most kitchens, a 12" fully clad fry pan, then a 3-qt saucepan and an 8-qt stock pot. The Pan Finder tailors the construction to your cooking.

Is the Pan Finder sponsored?+

Recommendations follow fixed rules based on material behavior and listing specs. Links go to Capital Cookware, as disclosed on our About page.

Does the quiz collect my email?+

No. It runs entirely in your browser and asks for no personal details.

Why does my burner type matter?+

Gas and induction change heat instantly, which rewards responsive pans; electric elements change slowly, so steadier 5-ply construction helps.

Can I retake the quiz?+

Yes. Restart at any time to compare recommendations.

What if I want both stainless and nonstick?+

Most cooks do. Use stainless for most cooking and one nonstick fry pan for eggs. See stainless vs nonstick.
